Rottnest Island (Rottnest Express)

Rottnest Island is an island close to Perth and the perfect getaway from the city. Rottnest Express organizes all kinds of packages including within the ferry trip. I got the package where you hire a bike for a full day, which was a perfect way to explore the island.

The ferry left at 9.45 from Fremantle, so we had to take the train there (it is only $ 3,80 and about 30 minutes from Perth Central). The ferrytrip itself is very comfortable and for once I didn’t get seasick! The bikes were waiting for us as soon as we arrived at Rottnest and our day full of sightseeing and activity could begin. The whole island is easy to cycle and even if you take many breaks, you will still have enough time to see almost all of the beautiful beaches.

We had a perfect day full of sun and even though it is winter in Perth, we were still able to swim in the ocean! The beaches are truly pristine and untouched and often it happened we had the complete beach for ourselves. The island is really quiet with almost no cars, so it is the perfect opportunity to come to a rest and get peace in your mind. Biking around the island completes this experience. On the bike we saw many Quokkas (a kind of kangaroo/rat), lizards and birds.

There are also plenty of snorkel opportunities and if the season is right, you can even go on Whale Watching tours. If you want to stay overnight there are also nice lodges and hotels on the island, as well as some fine dining. Rottnest Island is amazingly peaceful and beautiful, so if you are looking for an affordable way to get away from the rush of Perth, this is your trip!
